Thursday, Friday and Saturday I kicked out another four chapters, bringing the total word count on the book to 56,825. The book is hitting that critical point where the plot is becoming more complicated, and events have to tighten. I’m roughly eight chapters out from where we start the push to the climax. Time for some bloodletting and forces moving to their end-game positions.

This is a point where getting the balance of chapters right can be difficult. The trick is to give enough space to the events you need to have happen that you can layer them with significance. It’s not enough to have a data-point. Characters have to be involved and invested in the outcome of things. This is the part of the book which is the closest to magic of anything. Restructuring the book in another draft might be required to deal with any problems here, but it’s all dependent on the growth arc for characters. As long as they progress well, the situation is under control.
