The Secrets Newsletter #80

Issue 80 of The Secrets Newsletter went out to subscribers today.

This issue is devoted to an article titled Morality in Fiction. In it I discuss our responsibilities as writers to our readers and to ourselves when choosing what sort of issues we address, and how we address them. Much of fiction gets dismissed as escapist entertainment. While I believe the primary job of an author is to entertain, the fact is that our stories often involve moral judgments and morally ambiguous situations. If we fail to examine what we say in presenting them, we abrogate our responsibility to our readers and society at large.

Yeah, I know, heavy stuff for hot summer days, but if you’re not going to consider this stuff, you’re really shorting yourself and your work. That’s never a good idea.
